DC Motors

Electric vehicles are the wave of the future as many countries are experiencing higher gas prices due to the scarcity of fossil fuels in many parts of the world. Electric vehicles or energy efficient cars are seen by many as just the thing that we need in order to realize a more energy efficient future. Fuel efficient cars are also a big help to the movement towards a more sustainable future but the electric cars are often seen by many people as better because they do not use fuel at all. Electric cars run on DC motors in most cases and this type of motor is good because it is cheap to manufacture and very reliable. Fuel efficient cars and the motors that they come with are also very reliable but they can still cause problems such as carbon monoxide emissions into the atmosphere causing things like acid rain and ozone depletion.

DC motors allow for simpler control of motor speed as well as better efficiency in energy used to power an electric vehicle. Cars with DC Motors may be expensive initially but as more of these types of cars are made the prices will inevitably go down. Some downfalls of the DC motor include the wear and tear it may experience during use of the electric car. These motors often have a lower lifespan than that of fuel efficient cars because of the overused brushes and springs in the DC motor. These brushes and springs must be replaced regularly and lead to much discouragement within the auto world because of this. Cleaning the commutator is also a must when it comes to maintenance of a DC motor. One can only hope that in the near future car manufacturers can come up with a way to make it so these motors require less maintenance.
